How to Get Your First Chocobo Mount & Companion in FFXIV

If you are a first time player of Final Fantasy, you might not realize that you get a mount quite early in this game.  Here is how to obtain your very first chocobo, which is a free mount all players get early in the game.

First, you must be at least level 20.

Second, you need go through the Main Scenario Questline through to the point where you choose to join a Grand Company.  If you are leveling primarily through the storyline, you will probably get to this point around level 20-22 depending on your experience bonuses.  If you have strayed off from the main story questline to do leves or sidequests, you may end up being much higher than this by the time you progress through the MSQ to get to the Grand Company selection.

Once you select your Grand Company (there are three to choose from – The Maelstrom based in Limsa Lominsa, The Order of the Twin Adder in Girdania and The Immortal Flames in Ul’dah) then you will have access to a questline called “My Little Chocobo” which is available at your Grand Company.

Once you have the quest, you need to purchase the “Chocobo Issuance” from the quartermaster in your chosen grand company, which costs 200 seals.  While you likely have enough seals, if not, head out and do a handful of FATES which reward company seals as well as experience.

After purchasing the issuance, you will need to follow the quest to find the chocobo stables in your Grand Company’s zone.  The quest reward is your own chocobo whistle.  Once you use the whistle and summon your first chocobo, you get to name it with a custom name and your chocobo is yours.

As you further progress through the MSQ and reach level 30, you unlock a new feature to your chocobo with the quest “My Feisty Little Chocobo”.  This teaches your chocobo to become a companion to fight alongside you as you do FATES, quests and more in the game.   This quest is available in the South Shround from Docette (X:17 Y:28) at Camp Tranquil (there is an aetheryte for fast travel if you have been there before).

Once you have done this quest, you can use Gysahl Greens to summon your chocobo to you for 30 mins to fight alongside you.  Gysahl Greens can be purchased from many vendors, you don’t need to buy them on the (overpriced) marketboard.

Your chocobo can rank up as well, as they earn experience for all the kills they participate in, and you can also train them in a Chocobo stable if you are in a Free Company with a house, or you own your own apartment.  You can rank up your chocobo either way until they reach level 10, when you will need to feed them Thavnarian Onions to rank them up beyond that.
